I am interested in the complex relationship between image, presentation and sound, the power of editing and the beauty and tragedy of individual perception. My work integrates formally composed imagery, layered soundscapes, intimate settings and personal subject matter. I like to explore feminine archetypes in my work and how I can manipulate or separate the societal constructs from a truly feminine viewpoint. In my videos I focus on the complexity that exists between the image, the presentation and the sound. This interplay between elements is what engages me with this medium and challenges me to constantly look for new means of expression within its many combinations. Through performance and improvisation within a structure, I create work that is immersive with a visceral and voyeuristic edge. The position of the viewer is one of intimate observer and the lush color and layers of sound act as a means of seduction. The sensory dimension of the work is usually juxtaposed with an interesting structure or compositional strategy. This balance between sensory tactics with formal compositional language is my preferred tool of expression and what I find challenging in the creation of the work. All of my work has been engaged with the investigation and presentation of a particular viewpoint through the stressing of identity, character or role-playing. Through the act of performing and recording various scenarios I try to examine and mediate what is considered feminine in our society. My themes tend to explore bodily fragmentation, meditative states, private rituals and the nature of female role-playing through the process of performance and improvisation. I feel that through presenting myself as a specific female character or “persona” a powerful tool can be wielded in dissecting and questioning feminine traits and behaviors in our everyday lives.
